4 Tips For Better Driving

Better Driving

The road to getting your driver's license is probably one of the most exciting highlights of a young person's life. And with that comes the responsibility to get into good habits when you first start learning how to drive. All the habits that your driving instructor instils in you will help you later on.

Here are some of the most common lessons your learner driver instructor will cover for safer driving:

#1: Before Starting Your Car

Before you start your car, make sure to adjust your seat. As you've probably noticed, learner drivers instructors always reach down to adjust your seat. This is to ensure that your headrest is at the correct height, the backrest is positioned comfortably, and the seat is close enough for you to have a good view and reach the steering wheel and pedals.

Next, you'll want to make sure that the mirrors are correctly adjusted. A 5-point check is crucial so that you're aware of the road and surroundings. Lastly, you want to make sure that your seat belt is positioned correctly so that you are safe and comfortable for the drive. Also, make sure the same is done for passengers.

#2: Starting The Car

Once your car has been turned on, your learner driver instructor will tell you to have your foot on the brake, put it in drive, making sure the handbrake is down. When leaving the curb, make sure that you indicate for about 5 seconds while checking your mirrors for a clear path. Also, make sure there's a 3 second period for indicating when you're going to turn. This is also important for when you're about to change lanes or at a roundabout to check your blind spots.

#3: Pay Attention To Your Surroundings

It is vital that you're always aware of your surroundings. Make sure to always look left and right at every intersection, as your learner driver has taught you. Look out for all entry and exit points.

Learner driver instructors will also tell you to slow down and show caution if you cannot see what's happening five cars ahead of you.

#4: Follow The Road Signs

You must follow road signs. Stop when there's a stop sign. Stick to the speed limit or drive slower. Avoid queueing across intersections, and slow down when the traffic light turns orange.
